In reply to <a href="https://cats.com/amlodipine-for-cats#comment-184124">Claudia Hrebicek</a>.

Hi Claudia, I'm sorry to hear about your kitty. Just objectively based on your cat's weight and the dose you mentioned, 2.5mg per day for an 8lb cat would be considered a high dose. Higher doses may be warranted initially in cases where the doctor is concerned about a hypertensive emergency. This is often for blood pressures exceeding 200mmHg or otherwise where we're concerned we're seeing acute illness signs directly related to hypertension. I was not clear from your description what the situation was for why it was prescribed at the ER. Just for myself, if I start with a very high dose due to an emergent condition, I try to recheck a blood pressure a couple days later and see if I can reduce the dose. There are certainly some cats that can have persistent or poorly responsive hypertension even at higher doses of amlodipine and sometimes that causes worsening illness. Amlodipine is commonly given to cats with kidney disease (because hypertension and kidney disease can often be related or otherwise, we just see so many older cats with kidney disease) and it really depends on the level of CKD they have as to how much concern to have starting a higher dose. I might be more concerned if she started out with only mild kidney disease and we think it worsened severely in only 10 days. Whereas if she already was in stage 3-4 of CKD, complete failure can occur at any time. It sounds like she tolerated the amlodipine for nearly two weeks before she worsened. That being related to the medication could be possible though hard to be sure of without labwork to demonstrate that. Or, like you said, her kidney disease may have worsened on its own, especially if she was already in a later stage to begin with and that was part of the reason you went to the ER. So, high dose? Yes. Definitively the cause for her worsening? It is a possibility but not possible to be certain and in cats of her age, rapid decline can always occur for any number of reasons. Either way, I am sorry for your loss.

Our 19 year old kitty was put on Amlodipine - the Er vet prescribed “Give 1 tablet by mouth every 24 hours” - these were 2.5 mg tablets …. 11 days in and before her next blood pressure check, she declined rather rapidly. Went from eating well to stop eating in 36 hours, crouching, barely moving, lethargic, over all unwell. We thought her renal failure had taken a sudden turn for the worse …. I was not made aware of side effects of the Amlodipine … and didn’t think of googling it until now …. Now I am reading that this was a very high dose … we had put our kitty to sleep not wanting her to suffer …. But now I am thinking the dosage was too high and might have caused our kitty to act as if she was dying … I feel horrible that we might have ended her life too soon …
Was 2.5 mg too high a dose for an 8 pound kitty?!

A feral queen and her litter adopted me this spring. I had to watch her suffer through a southern summer outdoors with fleas, mosquito bites. When she was finally trapped for her spay the vet wrote me a prescription for Credelio to use after the Bravecto wore off. One of her kittens takes it in a pill pocket. She took it crushed in her pate. I would not be able to help them if not for this medicine and some other chewables for worms and other parasites. I’m eternally grateful.

I have used the spray method with success for misbehavior, as well. It worked for me, too. And, my cats were always close to me. They get lots of good attention, so if I yell at them or spray them, they know that they are still very loved and just shouldn't repeat the behavior.

Surprisingly, some FB pages dedicated to helping cats arebfull of posts such as 'Cats can stay warm in a shelter with only straw. I dont think any of us would feel comfortable with only a coat and straw to protect us from sub freezing temps.Im going to share this piece on several sites. Hopefully people will be more proactive in protecting cats...especially ferals who rely on us for help.

Hello Mallory, I used to buy Feline Natural by the case. Chicken and Chicken with Lamb. But in the last year this company has changed the quality and manufacturing company, according to them. I've read that others have noticed and complained. More importantly my cat won't even eat it either. Lamb and Chicken can version looks like a mess loaded with white pieces of Fat. And the plain Chicken can food has fish oil added, unlike before. To put it mildly...It no longer smells like Chicken, rather like Heavy fish smell. They claim the can food is improved. That is obviously incorrect.
Thank you, cats.com I appreciate your site

thank you,
Came up with the same idea, trying to limit access to outside at night early in the evening by blocking flappers off. Of course he started spraying and bad behaviour to show his alpha male. Thank you for replying.
