In reply to <a href="https://cats.com/wet-vs-dry-cat-food#comment-85616">Elizabeth Matarese</a>.

I feed my cat ZIWI chicken which my Ragdoll loves. I recently changed him to Venison which I’m experimenting with. One of my three kitties (CKD) got a hold of the food ( I really need to keep an eye out while all of them eat as they play musical bowls) anyway my lil cat 6 pounds with CKD had emesis after eating the ZIWI.
But the Ragdoll will be supervised. I added water to the can as it is very dense. May I suggest ZIWI lamb formula?

Hi Gari, while the recommendation in this article is echoed by many reputable sources, we appreciate that some veterinary sources also recommend a shorter period. We've decided to edit the article to make a more conservative recommendation.

I cannot take this article and website seriously. And I hope that other readers also don't take this seriously. I mean, does the author really think it's anywhere near OK to leave a can of cat food open for up to 7 days just because you keep it in the fridge? This is seriously dumb and dangerous. Shame that cats.com don't seem to care enough about cat welfare to let this incorrect info stand since 2021!

It might be worthwhile to put more emphasis on the water problem. That is the only concrete difference between the two food types, and it's a big deal. It's not really 'extra water' coming from wet food, it's much more than that, and it feels pretty minimized by the writing here (I know this point is well articulated elsewhere on the site though).

There are multiple studies demonstrating that cats eating only dry food get 30-50% lower total water intake, despite drinking more water orally. This is really important for people to know when talking about dry vs wet food

In reply to <a href="https://cats.com/wet-vs-dry-cat-food#comment-85615">Elizabeth Matarese</a>.

I have a just turned 1 year old ragdoll and am trying without much success to transition him onto Ziwi wet food from Royal Canin kitten. He isn’t keen on the venison or chicken, not sure if it’s the texture. He’s predominantly on wet food with just a sprinkling of dry food to entice him to eat the new food. I wasn’t keen on feeding him RC or Hills (because of all the mystery ingredients) but there wasn’t much option in the kitten range and he tends to have a sensitive stomach so didn’t want to muck around transitioning too many different foods.

I have read good things about Tiki and might give that a try before I run out of his current kitten food since RC have changed the formula. I know all cats are different but do you mind to let he know which variety you feed your cat as they have so many out there. I’m also confused about whether fish is actually good for cats or not as there is a lot of contradictory opinions out there.

Thanks

Thanks for your insights, Elizabeth! We're actually working on a post about grain-inclusive cat foods which will go more in-depth about the problems with carbs in cat food. That's definitely good advice too, about adding water to each meal. I've begun doing that myself and it's been working well for my cats too!

And I should mention water, because water is important, and a lot of cats do not go for water in a bowl!
I add a couple of tablespoons of water to each meal. A vet with many, many years of experience with cats told me this when I had a cat with a urinary tract problem....and it has worked.

The article is okay, but the emphasis on cats as carnivores is not strong enough. Carbs are not good for cats...and a lot of kibble seems to have appetite attractants added. Leading to fat cats.
I look at it this way....if you don't spend the money on healthy food, you'll be spending it on vet bills when your cat gets sick. It is as simple as that. So, i opt for wet food and use the dry food as a treat. And I am a Tiki Cat catfood fan. This company has not had a recall....ever. It makes cat food to human grade health code standards. Is it expensive? Yes.
But my objective is to avoid health problems with my cats and the anxiety and worry that come with them for me....not to mention the time and trouble and cost to fix the problem.

I have done a lot of research on cat food after my cat was diagnosed with kidney disease. Cats don't drink much water, so wet food is very important for their body.

Dry kibble is highly processed and causes a lot of health issues. A number of informed vets do not recommend dry food.

I was disappointed to see this article.

Michelle, I think you know what to do. A combination of high-quality dry and wet food sounds great, and the running water fountain should help a lot, too. Again, you're on the right track. All the best!
