The Heart to Tail Pure Being Lickable Cat Treats has CARRAGEENAN listed as one of the 6 ingredients. Carrageenan is known to cause cancer in cats and is a VERY cheep binder. I expected better from Aldi :(

I've owned multiple cats nearly continuously for nearly 60 years - since before there was commercial cat food and have investigated most of the major brands for nutritional content. Since they first became available I've fed my cats primarily dry cat food. Except for one that died of cancer all lived to a minimum of 16 years, in good health until their last two years. The longest lived one was fed Aldi's Pure Being and lived to 18 years, 4 months.

Would I feed my cats "Heart to Tail"? Not if I could afford Pure Being. If I couldn't I wouldn't worry about my cats health being significantly reduced any more that I would worry about my own being reduced by eating foods that were cheaper but harder to pre-digest (cook). Heart to Tail is more knowledgeably constituted than the commercial pet foods available in the 1960s. I'd worry about dangerous contamination. Aldi has one of the best safety records among pet food marketers.

It is true that cats have idiosyncratic biology among mammals. It is true that cats evolved to get their essential nutrient by hunting and
killing animals and eating their raw meat. It has not been scientifically proven that this is the optimal diet for cats. What we do know is that cats require certain amino cases and compounds that most mammals can synthesize but cats can not. One source of these is meat. Another is human ingenuity.

There is a lot of misinformation based on half-truths about food and nutrition, for humans and their pets, mostly second hand opinions biased by "common sense" not based in science or longitudinal studies. The most common misconception is that living organisms respond radically different to proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, amino acids, minerals and vitamins based on where those come from. Human nutrition which has been studied the most intensively of all has seen radical changes in beliefs about what a healthy diet is. Nutrition of animals has had much less research. Most of what we "know" about pet food is consensus belief, not facts.

Don't accept second hand opinions as facts.

I have noticed scarce stocking of the salmon variety (in more than one store) but plenty of tuna/whitefish & the turkey & giblet type weekly. Is there a salmon shortage or could this simply be an isolated regional issue? the feral cat I feed is very particular and unhappy without his salmon lunch lately. ( thankfully he does like hot dogs.)

Thanks for sharing, Beth! If you're going to feed your cat dry food, offering some wet food along with it is a great idea. Glad to hear it's working wonders for his coat!

I just want to add that I've been feeding my cat Aldi's canned food his whole life, the bigger can. But now that I read these reviews about the little can I'm going to investigate that. But I've been using can food kind of like a treat couple times a day a little half a teaspoon or a teaspoon and he absolutely loves it. Well he's not picky. But he's always had a beautiful shiny coat and when I've used other canned foods I noticed that his hair is not as shiny he looks like an old raggedy cat from outside. And right now I'm actually trying out the dry food for the first time it just doesn't seem like much to it don't smell good either but he likes it so we haven't had a problem I'm just hoping that it's good for him like it says. I like to give dry with the wet because I feel like the dry brushes his teeth. And thank you so much for all this information I've been wondering and all these is like tight-lipped on any information I don't know how they get away with that either
