You’re correct – at least there was certainly a recall in the UK. However, it was not public – only customers who received that batch were informed (by email only). There is no FDA in the UK, it is a US body.

Considering the reported and repeated serious food safety issues, it’s deeply concerning to imagine how bad that batch must have been, to be recalled.

That recall was not even announced by Katkin on their own Facebook group or website. It seems only specific customers were emailed, and appears some of those affected didn’t receive the emails. Katkin must be aware that their emails won’t go into most people’s main inbox, and many people won’t read them, expecting them to be the usual delivery updates and marketing.

You’re not the only person to be concerned. Hundreds of customers appear to have had similar experiences, sadly.

More problematic, Katkin does not generally issue recalls, and there have been multiple cases of choking sized/sharp pieces of bone and cartilage, especially in Gobble, of which Katkin are well aware. Many customers have sent them the foreign bodies at their request – no recalls, and the same issues are still recurring (check TrustPilot reviews).

Other food safety issues include large pieces of blue plastic in the food repeatedly, even after Katkin said their factory staff would have training to unwrap the meat, but the issue continues. There have also been repeated reports of bacterial contamination, and multiple people say their cats got very sick.

I used to be a customer, until they changed the food and claimed they had only ground it slightly finer and cooked it more. This was patently untrue. At the same time, they cut off deliveries for that month to 4,000 customers with two days’ notice (email only), due to issues at the factory. A lot of cats, many with health issues, had to have their food switched overnight.

An investigative journalist was about to get an expose published in a major UK broadsheet newspaper…but Katkin threatened to sue. They also threatened the young admin of a ‘Katkin Refugees’ group with over 800 concerned former customers, with legal action.

Katkin also got most of the negative UK TrustPilot reviews removed by falsely claiming reviewers had never been customers. There have also been data protection issues, with customers having been repeatedly contacted after asking Katkin to delete their account and information.

I believe cats.com has been made aware of all of this, so it’s disappointing to see a review which doesn’t appear to take it into account.

Personally, I would feel safer feeding the cheapest possible supermarket kibble to my cats, instead of this.

I can provide proof of everything I said, and also prove I was a former customer.

Thank goodness for your article, I was ready to send for Katkin because I believed their hype but sadly greed has taken over their integrity and like most cat food suppliers they have resorted to an inferior product.

This is concerning. Where have you seen this? Can you provide a link? My boy loves Gobble (and pretty much all flavours available).
